Central Heating Repairs in Athlone and the Midlands

When your central heating system stops working - especially in the middle of an Irish winter - you need a heating engineer who can diagnose the fault quickly and carry out a reliable repair. Our heating repair service covers Athlone, Westmeath, Roscommon, and the wider Midlands, and we work on all types of central heating systems including oil-fired, gas, and heat pump installations.

Every member of our team is RGI registered, ensuring that all work on gas and oil appliances meets the strict safety and compliance standards required by Irish law. We provide free, no-obligation quotes and aim to complete most repairs in a single visit.

Common Heating Problems We Fix

Radiators Not Heating Properly

Cold spots on radiators, radiators that are warm at the top but cold at the bottom, or radiators that fail to heat at all are among the most common heating complaints we deal with. The causes vary - trapped air, sludge build-up, a faulty TRV (thermostatic radiator valve), or an imbalanced system. We diagnose the specific cause and carry out the appropriate fix, whether that involves bleeding radiators, replacing a faulty TRV, or balancing the entire system using radiator balancing techniques.

Circulating Pump Failures

The circulating pump is the heart of your central heating system. When it fails, hot water cannot circulate through the radiators, leaving your home cold. Common symptoms include a completely silent pump (indicating electrical failure), a humming pump that is not moving water (seized impeller), or a leaking pump body. We carry replacement circulating pumps for most common systems and can usually complete a pump swap in under two hours.

Zone Valve and Motorised Valve Faults

Modern heating systems use zone valves or motorised valves to direct hot water between the heating circuit and the hot water cylinder. When a motorised valve sticks or its actuator fails, you may find that you have heating but no hot water, or vice versa. We diagnose valve faults using electrical testing and either repair or replace the faulty component. Common replacements include the Honeywell V4043H two-port valve and the Honeywell V4073A mid-position valve.

Thermostat and Programmer Issues

A faulty thermostat can cause your heating to run continuously, fail to come on at all, or cycle on and off erratically. We troubleshoot all types of thermostats, from simple room thermostats to wireless programmable models. Where a thermostat is beyond repair, we supply and fit a replacement that is compatible with your existing system.

Heating System Diagnostics

System Pressure Problems

Your central heating system operates within a specific pressure range - typically between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when cold. If the system pressure drops regularly, there may be a leak in the pipework, radiators, or boiler. If the pressure rises too high, the expansion vessel may have lost its charge. We carry out a thorough pressure test to identify the cause and then repair the leak or recharge the expansion vessel as needed.

Expansion Vessel Issues

The expansion vessel in a sealed central heating system absorbs the increase in water volume as the system heats up. Over time, the diaphragm inside the vessel can fail or the vessel can lose its air charge, leading to pressure fluctuations, boiler lockouts, and water discharging from the pressure relief valve. We test expansion vessels using a tyre pressure gauge on the Schrader valve and recharge or replace the vessel as required.

Noisy Heating Systems

Banging, gurgling, or kettling noises from your central heating system are not normal and usually indicate a fault. Gurgling often points to trapped air or low system pressure. Banging may be caused by pipework expanding against joists or floorboards. Kettling - a sound like a boiling kettle - typically indicates limescale or sludge build-up on the heat exchanger and may require a power flush to resolve.

System Balancing

Radiator balancing is the process of adjusting the lockshield valves on each radiator so that hot water is distributed evenly throughout the system. Without proper balancing, radiators closest to the boiler may overheat while those furthest away remain lukewarm. We use a digital thermometer to measure the temperature differential across each radiator and adjust the lockshield valves until the system is balanced correctly. This simple procedure can dramatically improve the comfort and efficiency of your heating.

Preventative Maintenance

Many heating breakdowns are preventable with regular maintenance. We recommend an annual heating system check that includes testing system pressure, checking the circulating pump, inspecting zone valves and motorised valves, bleeding radiators, and verifying that the thermostat and programmer are functioning correctly. An annual service keeps your system running efficiently and helps identify potential problems before they become costly repairs. Heating Repairs Questions Answered

Why are some of my radiators cold at the bottom?
Cold spots at the bottom of radiators typically indicate a buildup of sludge and debris in the system. A power flush clears this out and restores full heat output. We can diagnose the issue and recommend the best solution.
How often should I have my heating system serviced?
We recommend an annual service for your heating system, ideally before winter. Regular servicing prevents breakdowns, maintains efficiency, and extends the life of your boiler and radiators.
Can you repair both oil and gas heating systems?
Yes, our engineers are experienced with oil boilers, gas boilers, and heat pump systems. All gas work is carried out by RGI Registered Gas Installers for your safety and compliance.
My heating is making banging or gurgling noises. What does that mean?
Banging or gurgling noises usually indicate trapped air in the system, a failing pump, or limescale buildup. These issues worsen over time, so it is best to have them diagnosed early to avoid a full breakdown.
